Description
Eastlake detailing sets the tone for this one-story clapboarded turn-of-the-century cottage. The primary elevation faced east, towards Campus Avenue. A hipped roof sits atop a paneled frieze and boxed cornice. At the south end of the facade, a gable tops a squared bay. Ornamental brackets accent the roofline. Turned wood columns and a stick railing define a porch recessed in the northeast corner of the cottage. The porch contains the entry, flanked by double-hung windows. A decoratively paned upper sash enhances the window centered on the north (Ninth Street) elevation. Except for a missing porch post, the house is intact and in fair condition. It is an important remnant of the past at the southwest corner of Ninth and Campus. RESEARCH NOTES: With the property adjacent to the west, this house was part of the Williams family compound. As early as 1898 the directories included R.C. Williams, rancher. By 1900 R.C. Williams, then a blacksmith, and wife, were listed on East Ninth Street. His wife was never identified by name in the directories, but was probably the Emma Williams who was often the assessed owner of the family properties. In 1909-10 Richard C. Williams was in partnership with his brother Fred as contractors and builders; the business was a planing mill at 122 Euclid in 1911. When W. Dundas joined the mill as a partner, R.C. Williams was simply described as a building contractor and may no longer have been associated with Williams and Dundas. Other members of the Williams family who lived with R.C. over the years included Clara Williams (see 674 East Ninth) and Glenn Williams, a clerk at the post office. According to the assessment record, this house was built in 1897- 98, after the property was purchased from the Harwood Brothers.
