Description

A veranda sweeping around the south and west elevations is the dominant feature of this one-and-one-half-story Craftsman bungalow. Sheathed with wide clapboard and trimmed with endboards, the dwelling is capped with a front-facing gabled roof. A pent roof shelters the veranda. On the west, a shed dormer overlooks the side yard. The roof is detailed by extended rafters, bargeboards, and decorative brackets. The veranda roof is supported by battered wood posts and enclosed by a solid clapboard rail. Four steps with cobblestone rails lead to a slightly offset entry. Fenestration includes one-over-one double-hung sash windows disposed around the veranda and a pair in the face of the gable. The structure is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was probably erected by 1909-10 owner J.B. Howell or 1911-14 owner S.E. Spicer. It had been built by 1912 when the Sanborn map included the footprint of "809." Samuel E. Spicer was a building contractor and perhaps is the logical choice. The next owner, John Raney, held title from 1915 to 1919. He was an apiarist and lived in the house. Subsequent owners include Ward H. Shulze, another building contractor, and the Macintosh family, which included Marjorie, a nurse at the San Antonio Hospital.
