Description
The focal point of this one-and-one-half story bungalow is its incorporation of cobblestone features. Beneath a side gable roof of medium pitch with a central hipped dormer, the structure rests on a stone foundation. Extended eaves and carved rafter tails decorate the roofline. The recessed porch spans the facade, and is supported by battered stone piers. Flanking the five centrally-located stairs which lead to the space; stone rails culminate in pedestals with battered wood posts sitting on them. An offset door is set between cottage windows with diamond-paned upper sashes. Two double-hung sash windows occupy the dormer face. The dwelling is intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Ada and Edwin 0. Bowen built this house in 1917-18, according to the assessment record. Curiously, Bowen, a packer, was listed in the 1914 directory on "Boulevard 3 east of Campus." In 1916-17 the description is changed to "2 west of 8th ave." Bowden, whose wife Ada is included in the 1919-20 listing, was a field manager for Peppers and Marton in that year. By 1922-23, Edwin 0. Bowden was married to "May," and he was a rancher on W. 17th near San Antonio.
