Description
An attractive use of cobblestone elements complements the design of this one-and-one-half story Craftsman residence. It is capped by a side gable roof of moderately steep pitch with a central shed dormer. The gabled roof is enhanced by extended eaves, exposed rafters, and brackets. Spanning the facade of the clapboarded structure, a recessed porch is defined by cobblestone piers and wall. Paired crossbeams act as "capitals." Tapered posts frame the centered entrance to the porch. Eyebrow drainage vents in the porch walls are carefully delineated with stone "voussoirs." A central cottage window with a decoratively paned upper sash overlooks the porch. Entries to each side indicate that this is now a duplex. A band of small square windows fills the dormer. The only variance to the otherwise symmetrically arranged fenestration are three-quarter length side lights on the door to the left (east) of the window. This additional element may indicate that the structure was originally a single family dwelling and converted into a duplex at a later date. Nevertheless, the structure is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Thomas and Lizzie Nichols were apparently responsible for the construction of this house, probably shortly after purchasing the property in 1908-09. The 1909-10 directory lists T.M. Nichols, Santa Fe freight and ticket agent, as residing on the "south side of Boulevard, east of Campus, in the Pleasant View Tract." The family remained there until the early 1920s. In the 1912 Sanborn "840 Railway Blvd" is shown as a single family dwelling.
