Description
A strongly decorative quality enhances the design of this one-and- one-half story Craftsman bungalow. It rests on a cobblestone foundation, is sheathed in wide clapboard, and capped by a front facing gabled roof. Triangular brackets, four clustered in the peak and one at each corner, and an extended bargeboard with rounded ends detail the gable end. Rafter tails are also rounded and visible in the eaves. The gable face is sheathed with bands of conventional and diamond-shaped shingles. Three windows with rows of small lights across their tops are separated by the eaved brackets. A low-pitched shed dormer protrudes from the west side of the gable. Four steps with cobblestone rails lead to a porch recessed across the facade. Stout wood posts and a clapboard railing enclose the space. A bracketed frieze spans the opening. Fenestration is symmetrically arranged, and includes a central door flanked by large 1811 double-hung sash windows. The west elevation is anchored by a cobblestone chimney. Unaltered, the bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: This house was most likely constructed for A.M. Curran, the owner in 1911 after B.P. Swartzendruber. The house did appear on the 1912 Sanborn (as "839"). Curran was a grocer, in partnership with G.W. Colborn.
