Description
A particularly handsome Craftsman entry distinguishes this oneand- one-half story Craftsman home. It is capped by a side gabled roof dominated by a large central dormer. The dormer is shedroofed, with two front gables, articulated by notched bargeboards and triangular braces, at the ends. Three double casements are equally spaced within the dormer. The pitch of the gable changes slightly at the bottom of the dormer, becoming less steep over the porch which spans the facade. Shaped rafter tails punctuate the eaves. Cobblestone piers support each end of the roof. The entrance is situated towards the west end of the porch. A broad oak door is pierced by four vertical channels of beveled glass which rise from a corbeled sill. Iron straps attach the door to its hinges. The generous proportions of the door are emphasized by an oak surround. To the right (west) a double-hung window overlooks the porch. On the left, casement windows on top of a cobblestone wall now enclose the remaining portion of the porch. Clapboard sheathes the lower level of the bungalow while shingles appear in the dormer. A cobblestone chimney rises above the east elevation. A fine example of Craftsman design despite the porch enclosure, the building is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Jeweler August L. palis was probably responsible for the construction of this house around 1912-13. The property was previously part of the holdings of A.O. and Alice Hadden, who lived at the corner of Washington and Eighth (790). This parcel was empty on the 1912 Sanborn. However, Palis is listed at this location by the time the 1914 directory appeared.
