Description
This two-story American Foursquare is a typical and largely intact example of the style. Resting on a stone foundation, the structure is sheathed in narrow clapboard and edged with endboards. Atop a plain friezeboard and boxed cornice, a bellcast hipped roof is accented with hipped dormers on the north and east facades. Latticed vents separated by a decorative panel fill the face of the dormers. A two-story, three-sided bay occupies the west half of the primary facade. wrapping the northeast corner, a spacious porch is defined by cobblestone piers and wall and a hipped roof. It has been enclosed with windows, and the entry moved forward. The one-over-one doublehung sash window disposed around the exterior are trimmed with a contiguous sill on the lower-story and lug sills on the upperstory. In good condition, the house is accented by a mature palm tree. RESEARCH NOTES: Abram 0. Hadden and his wife Alice were among the major landholders in this tract. They probably built this house around 1908. The 1909-10 directory shows Hadden, whose professional association was with the Ontario-Cucamonga Fruit Exchange, at this location. Beginning in 1913 Mrs. Ella Westland, the publisher and editor of the Upland News, was the owner and resident. Mrs. Westland was a prominent member of the community, involved in the Woman's Club and other local activities. She began her second marriage, to J.N. Beaubier, in this house.
