Description
A front facing gabled roof dominates this one-story Craftsman residence. The structure rests on a cobblestone foundation and is sheathed in wide asphalt shingles edged with endboards. Decorative brackets support the extended eaves. The ends of the bargeboards and rafters are extended and rounded. A tripartite vent with latticework occupies the peak of the gable and is topped by a pedimented molding. Recessed across the facade, the porch is defined by four tapered wood posts and an open railing. Two steps with stone rails lead to a central entry. It is flanked by one-over-one double-hung sash windows. A continuous sill wraps the building. The east elevation features a cant bay beneath a gable while the west elevation is topped by a shedroofed dormer. Although the siding has been altered, wood shingles were left on the wall behind the porch. The house is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Upland postmaster George B. Hayden and Estelle Hayden were the first assessed owners of this property following subdivision. They were probably responsible for the construction of the house, sometime before 1912. Jacob and Ella Doner were the next assessed owners; Jacob was a salesman with F.W. Palmer. Subsequent owners included G.W. Bailey (1919-20) and F.C. and Mae Bouser (beginning in 1921) .
