Description
A cross gabled roof gives the facade of this one-story Colonial Revival influenced cottage its L-shape. Covered with narrow clapboard, the cottage rests on a cobblestone foundation. Three steps with stone rails lead to a door located on the long leg of the "L." An eyebrow-shaped hood supported by pairs of wood brackets shades the door. The facade fenestration consists of paired casement windows to the right (east) of the door and to the left, centered below the front facing gable. The cottage is neatly trimmed with enclosed soffits, a shaped bargeboard, endboards, and lug sills. A window to the left of the door appears to have been filled-in and awnings have been added to the front windows. The cottage is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : James and Ada Benson owned this lot when it was unimproved, in 1923. Apparently Benson, a rancher and a carpenter, built the house in 1923-24 for their relatives Charles and Viola Benson, who moved in by the time the 1924 directory was issued. Charles Benson was the vice-president of Manker and Benson.
