Description

Symmetry governs the design of this one-story Craftsman bungalow. The clapboarded structure sits on a stone foundation beneath a side gable roof. A front gable projects from the center of the facade over an open porch. Exposed beams and rafters and extended bargeboards detail the roof. The porch is defined by its three step elevation and by the sturdy wood posts that support the gable. Centered within the porch the door features channels of beveled glass and is flanked by small double-hung sash windows. Banks of three larger, double-hung sash windows are located on the facade to either side of the porch. A stone chimney emerges from the house near the ridgeline of the primary gable. Intact, the bungalow is in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: Two builders were listed in the assessment record as owners of this property. Carpenter B.P. Swartzendruber was the owner between 1908 and 1911. Since he was one of the major property holders when Pleasant View was subdivided, it seems unlikely that he built the house. Following a brief ownership by Harry Harris, building contractor, Charles H. Betz assumed title. Since Betz was located on the corner of Tenth and Ninth by the directories, it seems more probable that he, as well as James Betz who was also a building contractor and lived in the house, was responsible for the construction.
