Description
Another Upland example of the use of cobblestone, this is a onestory Craftsman bungalow. Its gabled roof presents two front gables to the street, both with vertical slats in the gable ends. Exposed beams and rafters are visible in the eaves. The forward - gable is offset to the west and shelters a porch. Short elephantine piers on large, cobblestone bases define the corners of the space. Rising up the facade within the porch, a broad cobblestone chimney abuts the entry. Tapped by an extended lintel, the door is paneled and glazed in the Craftsman manner. A similar lintel crowns a pair of double-hung sash windows located on the facade east of the porch. The bungalow is sheathed with clapboard of alternating sizes. It appears to be intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: After building 960 E. Arrow in 1918-19, contractor Robert R. Wisely built this house in 1919-20. He was listed in the directory at this location in 1919-20. However, in 1920 the property was sold to Barbara Stempel, the widow of August Stempel, who took up residence in the house.
