Description
A disappearing phenomenon in urban America, this is a one-story, corner grocery store. Its most notable feature, other than its function, is a false front facade. Beneath the "cornice" a hood shades the street frontage. A central entry is flanked by boarded-up windows. The building is sheathed in a combination of horizontal and vertical wood siding. Except for a rear gable the roof appears to be flat. Located on the northwest corner of Ninth Street and Tenth Avenue, the building is shaded by trees in the parkway. Although somewhat altered it is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: According to the Sanborns the store, labeled "grocersw on the 1928 map, was built between 1912 and 1928. A jump in improvement assessments from $40 to $150 in 1918 may indicate construction at that time. The owners were Carl and Blanche Nicholson. In 1922 a change of ownership and another increase probably meant new construction or an addition. John and Mabel Rhoades were the new owners (after a brief period when Joseph Field held title). Subsequent owners included John and Grace Browning and John and Selma Rahn.
