Description
Although this one-story residence has been stuccoed, its Queen Anne heritage is still apparent in the shape, roofline, fenestration and porch treatment. The cottage is massed under a truncated hipped roof with gables projecting over a wing on the east and the north end of the porch. The hipped roof changes to a very low pitch to extend over a veranda wrapping the southwest corner of the structure. Both gable faces are pierced by round vents with snowflake cutouts. The roof is characterized by a boxed cornice, decorative bargeboards, plain friezeboard, and denticulate architrave. Queen Anne detailing such as turned wood posts, decorative brackets and a denticulated frieze enliven the porch. Narrowly proportioned fenestration is comprised of two doors set perpendicular to each other in the east corner of the veranda and one-over-one double-hung sash windows elsewhere on the exterior. Resting on a cobblestone foundation, the residence is well maintained. RESEARCH NOTES: Although the assessment record indicates that this improvement first appeared on this property in 1918-19, the house clearly predates that year. It was probably built around 1898-1900 and moved to the site. The empty parcel had been owned by F.C. and then Edwardine Crowell; F.C. Crowell was a prominent member of the Methodist Church. In the year the house first was assessed, George W. Bigley was the owner of most of the parcel. Bigley was a carpenter; his wife's name was Stella.
