Description
The late Queen Anne style is represented by this one-and-one-half
story residence. Two fairly steep front gables and a side gable
define the building wings. The smaller of the two front gables
caps a wing that projects from the center of the facade. It is
distinguished by an elaborately sawn and shaped bargeboard and
stickwork in the gable end. Bands of fishscale and conventional
shingles face the gable. A similar siding pattern ornaments the
raised apex of the rear gable, which is offset to the west. The
body of the house is clad with shiplap siding. It sits on a
stone foundation. On the east side of the facade a porch is set
beneath the side gable. It has been screened above a low porch
wall. A screen door with decorative woodwork may be a
reproduction. Windows are tall and narrow double-hung sash,
disposed singly and in pairs. Neatly landscaped, the house
appears to be largely unaltered and in good condition.
This house is significant as one of the handful of Queen Anne
residences in Upland. It is located in the Clubine and Oakley
Tract, located on 40 acres on the west side of Euclid on both
sides of Eighth Street. Laid out in 1887, the tract consisted of
45 lots on Euclid and 100 lots on other streets. Before an
auction of lots on ~pril 25, 1887, iron pipes were laid. ~espite
competition from the Ontario Land Company about property totaling
about $10,000 was sold. The following year ownership of the
tract changed and a legal battle over speculation houses that had
been built in it ensued, resulting in the moving of several
buildings.
It is unknown when this house was built. On the basis of style,
it is estimated to date to circa 1890. Notably intact, the house
was legally part of Ontario until the 1931 annexation to Upland.
