Description
Craftsman stylistic impulses govern the design of this one-andone-
half story residence. A side gable roof caps the clapboarded
structure, with a large front gabled dormer centered over the
facade. Exposed braces and rafters detail the roof lines. The
dormer contains a band of four double-hung sash windows. A porch
is recessed across the facade. It is enclosed by a low wall upon
which Tuscan columns sit. The entry is centered beneath the
dormer. Shutters have been added to the doorway. The house sits
on a cobblestone foundation, and stone stair walls flank the
three steps to the porch. In fairly good condition, the house
appears to be substantially intact. It is landscaped with
cypress and other trees and shrubbery.
According to the Ontario building permit records this house was
built in 1911. The estimated cost was $2000. Hiram Waterman was
the assessed owner. Waterman operated a garage on Euclid Avenue.
In 1921 a garage was added to this property. The house was
located in Ontario until the 1931 annexation of land west of
Euclid and south of Arrow joined the area to Upland. This house
is significant as an intact representative of the Craftsman style
which is associated with a prominent local businessman.
