Description
Waterman's Garage is a striking example of art stone construction.
The typical utilitarian design consists of a flat facade crowned
by a dramatically stepped parapet. Cornice moldings emphasize the
successive levels. A plain concrete stringcourse separates the
parapet from the lower facade. Four openings, two doors and two
windows, are equally spaced at street level. Concrete sills detail
the windows. Re-glazing of doors and windows appears to be the
only exterior alteration to this well-maintained building. It sits
adjacent to the sidewalk with no setback.
Conflicting reports of the history of this building date it
variously to 1885 and 1923. The tax books indicate that
improvement of the parcel occurred sometime between 1899 and 1914,
eliminating 1885 as a possible date. In 1907 the Sanborn pictured
a one-story garage of wood frame construction. By 1912 a building
matching the present one in size and of concrete block construction
had been built; it too was a garage. The same building is shown
in the 1928 Sanborn. Jonathan Rarick owned the property around the
time the concrete block building was erected, followed by Neils
Anderson. Hiram Waterman obtained the garage in 1920. The
building is significant as an intact and unusual example of an art
stone commercial/industrial building which is substantially intact
and associated with a long-lived local commercial enterprise.
