Description
Although this one-story house subscribes to no single
architectural style, it is clearly a remnant of the 19th century.
Particularly notable is the truncated hip roof, perhaps
originally intended to culminate in cresting. The L-shaped
facade features a cant bay on the projecting wing which is topped
by a gablet. Tucked into the void of the wL,ll a porch is raised
three steps and covered by a pent roof resting on turned columns.
The entry is oriented perpendicular to the street on the
projecting wing. Windows are tall and narrow double-hung sash.
The house rests on a cobblestone foundation and is sheathed with
horizontal siding trimmed with endboards. It appears to be
largely unaltered and in fairly good condition.
The assessment record reveals that this house sits on the west
half of lot 649 of the Ontario Colony, which was assessed to J.J.
Atwood. In 1900 the directory indicated that Atwood and his wife
lived on West Eighth. Atwood, who figured prominently in the
economic life of the community, was associated with Henry
Blakeslee in the lumber business. Later he opened Atwoods
Department store near the corner of Second and Ninth. This house
which is located in the section of Upland which was not annexed
until 1931, predates 1900 when Atwood was assessed for an
improvement and some trees and vines on his property. It is
significant as an example of an architectural type of that early
period and for its association with Atwood.
