Description
Although a one-story commercial building separates this two-story
residence from Second Avenue, it retains a recognizable degree of
historic integrity. An example of the American Foursquare style,
the house is hip-roofed and clapboard-sided. Carved brackets,
doubled and tripled, punctuate the boxed eaves. A pair of
corbeled brick chimneys emerge from the ridgeline. The roofline
establishes a strong horizontal line, which is echoed by sill
courses beneath the windows on both stories and frieze boards
which wrap the building over the openings. On the north (D
Street) elevation a two-story, three-sided bay is paralleled by a
cobblestone chimney. Sanborn maps indicate that an attached
porch wrapped the southwest corner of the house; it appears to
have been cut off by the commercial building.
This house is one of the Upland buildings associated with the
famous Craig family. It began life a block away near the corner
of Second and C, approximately where 261 and 267 are located
today. Built in 1900-01, it was the home of Dr. William H. and
Lois Craig and their growing family. Dr. craigls office, which
he shared with Dr. O.W. Kankel, was in another house next door to
the north. Around 1910 the Craig's sold the property on the west
side of Second, which was promptly developed with business
blocks. On land he owned on the east side of Second, Dr. Craig
built an office for himself, his son John, and his daughter Mary,
all of whom were physicians. This house was apparently moved to
its present location, the southeast corner of Second and D, and
the Craigs continued to live in it. It is pictured at this site
in the 1912 Sanborn; however, the parcel was taxed for land only
until 1924.
Other alterations include some re-glazing of the double-hung sash
windows and the doors, an exterior staircase on the south, and
the addition of an iron-railed balcony in the rear. The house,
which seems to have been converted to non-residential use, is in
good condition.
The house became the home of the Colony School, a private school
for kindergarten through eighth grade run by Miss Frances Barr,
in 1929. In 1931 the directories indicate that the senior Craigs
had moved to 581 N. Euclid; however, this house remained in the
name of Lois Craig until 1944.
