Description
This two-story Craftsman home combines several elements of the
stylistic vocabulary into a highly characteristic design. Very
low-pitched, front and side gables cap the structure, with
rafters and beams exposed in their generous overhangs. Beams and
rafters are exposed in the eaves. Alternating wide and narrow
slats form vents in the peaks of two of the front gables.
Shingles sheathe the dwelling, laid with alternating exposures
as to create a strong horizontal line. A broad porch projects
from the east half of the facade, covered by a one of the front
gables. Tapered cobblestone pedestals and short wood piers with
an exaggerated taper support the porch roof. Cobblestone was
also used for the porch wall, foundation and a chimney on the
west elevation. Two rows of small square lights pierce the front
door, located at the west end of the porch. It is flanked by a
tripartite window to the east.
On the basis of style it is estimated that this house was built
around 1910. Until 1931 it was located in Ontario; in that year
portions of the area south of Arrow and west of Euclid were
annexed to Upland. This house is significant as an above average
representative of the Craftsman style, one of several widely
scattered, Craftsman houses in the vicinity. Most likely it was
also associated with a citrus grove, as well.
A broad window banded by eight square lights at the top is
centered on the wing that projects west of the porch. pairs of
double-hung sash windows appear on the upper story. In good
condition, the house appears to be unaltered.
