Description

A front facing gabled roof with extended eaves and notched rafter tails caps this one-story Craftsman bungalow. Resting on a cobblestone foundation the structure is sheathed in medium clapboard. A porch is recessed across the facade and is shaded by a shed roof. Full height cobblestone piers and a cobblestone balustrade pierced by eyebrow drainage openings enclose the porch. The off-centered paneled and glazed door is accessed by a short flight of concrete steps with cobblestone rails. One-overone double-hung sash windows are located on both sides of the entry and are visually connected by a continuous sill. The face of the gable is occupied by a pair of vents with horizontal slats and a triangular bracket at the apex. The bungalow is intact and in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES : While the 1907 Sanborns illustrate an empty parcel, The 1912 Sanborn shows a house at this location ("591") and no house on the corner lot (today's "591"). The city directories show an Elmer Stauffer, day laborer, having rooms on the southwest corner of Third Avenue and G Street in 1909-10, when the lot was owned by neighbor Mrs. Mary C. Springer. In 1913 a J.W. Stauffer was the owner; the directories list John W. and Anna Pearl Stauffer at 579. From 1915, when the $300 improvement is recorded, it is owned by Edwin C. Treat, who was not included in the directories.
