Description
Multiple gables set the tone for this two-story Craftsman
residence. Three gables face front, stepping downwards and
forwards to cap the second floor, first floor, and porch. Each
of the gables is detailed with exposed beams and rafters in the
eaves and vertical venting in the peaks of the gable faces. The
porch gable is offset to the west and is supported by tapered
posts sitting on brick pedestals. Five steps are set between the
pedestals. To the east of the gable a low brick wall, plain
railing and another pedestal define an open extension of the
porch. On the east elevation a side entrance is similarly
treated, with a gabled entry flanked by an open porch which
merges with the front porch. Sheathed in clapboard, the building
rests on a cobblestone foundation. Windows are predominately
double-hung sash in type, with upper sashes characterized by a
geometric pattern of muntins.
According to the assessment record, this was the grove house for
lot 563 of the Ontario Colony. It was unimproved until 1924,
when a $2000 improvement was assessed to F.L. Winn. Previously
there had been trees on the 10-acre property but apparently no
buildings. Winn, who owned the house for at least twenty years,
was described as a rancher in the directories. His and wife
Clara's address was 602 West loth, t1602'1 because the numbering
system for Ontario was the reverse of that of Upland. Although
this house was on the north side of Arrow and thus presumably in
Upland, the addressing must have been uniform for both towns,
Upland on the north and Ontario on the south until 1931. This
house is significant as an intact example of a Craftsman grove
house.
A brick chimney is located on the west elevation. No major
alterations were observed, and the house is in good condition.
