Description
American Foursquare styling distinguishes this two-story
residence. The hipped roof overhangs the structure, punctuated
by shaped rafter tails in the eaves. A central dormer is also
hip-roofed and contains a lozenge-paned window between two
latticed vents. The horizontal line set up by the roofline is
echoed by sillcourses beneath the windows on both stories and by
a pent roof over the attached porch. Wrapping the northeast
corner of the narrowly clapboarded structure, the porch has been
enclosed with windows on the east elevation. Columns with Ionic
capitals rest on a low porch wall. The entry to the porch faces
the northeast corner, marked by a single step with cobblestone
rails, while the door to the house is located at the west end of
the porch. A tripartite window flanks the door to the left
(east) while a single, large window with a small upper sash
pierces the facade to the right.
This house is significant as an example of the American
Foursquare Style, popular nationwide between c. 1894 and c. 1908.
It was typified by boxy, two-story massing, hipped roofs with
central dormers, porches, and often by classical building
elements such as the Ionic columns in this house. ~othing is
known about the origins of the house, which is located in tract
6540. Subdivided in 1962, the tract was part of the old Mountain
View ~ddition, which was recorded in 1888. On the basis of
style, this residence, which presumably was a grove house, is
estimated to date c. 1905.
Double-hung sash are singly disposed around the upper story,
including one at each end of the facade. A chimney emerges from
the peak of the roof whose material appears to be the only other
alteration besides the porch enclosure. The property is in good
condition.
