Description
A dense stand of bottle brush and other shrubbery shield most of this one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage from view. Rising above the foliage, the hipped roof is crowned by a gablet containing a sawn decoration. The building is sheathed with narrow clapboards and rests on a stone foundation. Low stone stair walls flank the five steps up to the slightly offset entry. The door is located at the south end of an L-shaped porch characterized by turned wood columns and a spindle frieze. No other features are visible. It appears that the house is substantially intact and in good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: No improvements were assessed on this property in 1895-99. In 1902-03 a $100 improvement is noted. However the 1900-01 owner, W.F. Rabe is listed as living on First between Tenth (Arrow) and Eleventh in the 1900 directory, giving justification for a 1900 date of construction. William Rabe was a budder. The following owners, A.C., C.M., and O.R. Sikes, did not live in the house. George Evans, who paid the taxes on the property 1910-15, did; he was a packer or a picker, depending on what the 1909-10 directory intended by the abbreviation "pkr."
