Description
Tidy and symmetrical, this two-story home is an example of the
American Colonial Revival style. The rectangular mass is
sheathed with clapboards and capped by a side gable roof with
enclosed soffits. Centered on the lower facade, the entry is
shaded by a hood which describes a Palladian arch. Large corbels
support the hood. To either side of the entry are a cluster of
three six-over-one double-hung sash windows. Shutters frame each
group. Lined up above them, the side bays in the upper story
contain pairs of shuttered, six-over-one sash windows. A single
four-over-one double-hung sash window, also adorned with
shutters, is located above the entry. Brick was used for a
chimney on the west elevation and for the front steps. The house
appears to be substantially unaltered and in good condition.
No research on this house was available; in its absence it is
estimated that the house was built around 1915. It is notable as
an example of the American Colonial Revival style. First
achieving popularity after the 1876 Centennial, the Colonial
style was "revived" every few years or so. In the 1920s it was
often characterized by a two-story home of wood or brick whose
flat facades were organized around a central portico. This is
one of the few representatives of that mode in Upland. Because
of its isolation from other buildings of the same era it is
assumed that this may have been a grove house.
