Description
This two-story residence suggests the American Colonial ~evival
in appearance but may have began as a Craftsman home. A side
gable roof caps the clapboarded structure. Extending across the
facade, an attached porch is defined by tapered posts and a pent
roof. Above it, a balustrade encloses a balcony. Another
balcony tops a one story wing on the east. Pairs of double-hung
sash, framed by shutters, overlook the balcony. Lower story
windows are also double-hung sash on the sides; the front is
hidden by a fence and shrubbery. The house is in good condition;
its integrity is unknown.
The assessment record for this property indicates that there was
an improvement on the property prior to 1919 that was built some
time after 1901. James Monroe owned the land, which was part of
a 10-acre parcel, from 1900-07. Maggie A. Grant was the next
assessee (1908-09), followed by Charles Arnold, Based on style
and materials, it is estimated that the house was built around
1915. Its owner in 1919, H. Lovina Smith, was assessed for
trees, so this was a grove house as well. In the 1970s it was
the home of Upland Junior High School teacher Gordon Engle, who
was honored by the P.T.A. in 1976.
