Description
This fine example of Craftsman styling is located on the
southeast corner of Euclid and 15th. The two-story house is
capped by a side gable roof whose beams are exposed in the eaves.
A pair of stone chimneys emerge from the ridgeline, one at either
end. Spanning the lower facade, an attached porch is covered by
a shed roof which modulates into a front gable over the central
entry. The gable end contains an exposed truss. Stone walls and
pedestals carrying stout posts define the porch space. Flanked
by half sidelights, the entry contains a broad wooden door
attached by iron straps to its hinges. A large oval of beveled
glass pierces the door. Broad, single sash windows are equally
spaced to either side of the entry. The second story facade
fenestration is similarly symmetrical, consisting of pairs of
double-hung sash windows in the side bays and a single, smaller
openings in the center.
Notable styling and integrity distinguish this former grove
house. It is located in tract 2981 which was subdivided from a
portion of lot 452 of the Ontario Colony in June 1946. The
assessment record reveals that lots 451 and 452, a total of 20
acres, were owned by G.H. Phillips at least as far back as 1895.
There were trees and vines and a small improvement on the
property, judging by the assessment figures. After a series of
ownership changes William 0. Jones obtained the 20-acre property
in 1911-12. In 1918 an $1800 improvement assessment was levied,
perhaps indicating the construction of this house. However,
Jones, an orange grower, was listed at this location in the 1912-
13 directory. It is also possible that the house was built at
that time and omissions in the assessment record account for it
not being noted until 1918.
Shutters have been added to these openings. Sheathed in
clapboard, the house enjoys a generous frontage on Euclid Avenue.
Other than a cinderblock extension of the porch wall, the house
appears unaltered and is in good condition.
