Description
A pair of front gabled dormers with stickwork in their gable ends
are the focus of the design of this two-story Craftsman home.
Enhancing the effect, extended bargeboards cross between the
dormers. Behind the stickwork latticed vents pierce the peaks of
the shingled dormers. Each contains a band of four windows. The
ends of the principal side gable are similarly treated. An
exterior of the roof shades the porch which is recessed across
the facade. Cobblestone walls and pedestals and stout piers
define the space. It has been enclosed on the south end. On the
north end, the entry is located at the head of four steps. It is
flanked by 1411 sash windows. Clapboards sheathe the house,
which sits on a stone foundation. A pergola extends from the
north end of the house over the driveway. Both the house, which
is mostly unaltered, and the property are in good condition.
This house is located in lot 406 of the Ontario Colony. The
assessment record for that lot indicates that it was planted with
trees as early as 1895, when Sophie H. Huelster was assessed.
Subsequent owners included Clark K. Fenton (1906-08) and Wiona
Hammel (1909-10). In 1911 G.E. Bender became the title owner.
The November 16, 1911 issue of the Los Anaeles Builder and
Contractor printed a notice that John Gerry was erecting a $400
[sic] residence on Euclid for George E. Bender. The amount in
question was probably $4000. Beginning in 1912, Bender, an
orange grower, is listed at this location in the directories. He
sold the property in 1919 to Frances F. Yates, who immediately
resold it to Charles and Lora E. Coe. Coe was also a rancher.
The house is significant as a largely intact, Craftsman grove
house which is part of the development of Euclid Avenue.
