Description
Located on the northwest corner of Euclid and 18th, this one-andone-
half story Craftsman residence embodies the Craftsman
aesthetic. Its gabled roof is of very low pitch, and leaves
structural elements such as trusses in the gable ends and beams
and rafters in the overhanging eaves exposed. Dark brown
shingles sheathe the structure. Dramatic boulder porch piers and
walls firmly "anchoru the building to the landscape. A generous
amount of outdoor living space is provided by the porch which
wraps the front (east) and side (south) elevations; the southern
portion has been enclosed with windows. Windows are broadly
proportioned or banded together to maximize the visual
communications between interior and exterior spaces. A stone
chimney with a triangular stone cap is located near the northeast
corner of the house.
The assessment record reveals that this house was erected in
1918-19 for John G. and Iva B, Jacobs. In 1918 the couple
purchased this lot and two others in the Osborn subdivision and
planted groves. Curiously, the directories list the coupe at the
northwest corner of 19th and Euclid, probably a mistake. The
house is significant as an example of the Craftsman principles of
design. Beauty is derived from the honest use of materials left
in the natural state and structure, straight forwardly open to
view. The building merges with its landscape through its groundhugging
design. craftsmanship and attention to detail are
evident in the carefully composed boulder piers, walls and
chimney and in such details as the paired rafter tails. Ample
provision for healthy exposure to sunlight both outdoors and in
is incorporated into the design.
Unfortunately, an overscaled, shed-roofed dormer erupts out of
the roof, compromising the historic integrity of the design. The
alteration was made in the early 1980s. Mature trees, lawns and
shrubbery surround the house, which is in good condition.
These qualities are still evident despite the alteration.
Moreover, the house derives an additional measure of significance
from its identity as a Euclid Avenue grove house.
