Description
Still located on a ten-acre parcel, this one-and-one-half story
grove house is set far back from Euclid Avenue. The structure is
gabled, clapboarded, and influenced by the Craftsman style. A
front gable over the north end of the facade contains braces in
its eaves and a double-hung sash window in its face. Below it a
shed roof merges with the principal side gable to shelter a porch
which stretches across the facade. Plain posts support the porch
roof. Opening off the space are a door flanked by tall and
narrow double-hung sash windows on the north, a screened entry
offset to the south and a cottage window with a decoratively
paned upper sash at the south end. Rather small in scale, the
house is shaded by a few trees and enclosed by a picket fence.
It is in fairly good condition. It is linked to Euclid by a
small cobblestone bridge over the stone-lined gutter.
The assessment record indicates that an improvement has been on
this property since 1896-97 when it was owned by H. Lageschulte.
Lageschulte is listed as early as 1898 in the directories as a
rancher and orange grover. It is possible that the original
house is the north half of the present structure, based on the
window and door proportions. Lageschulte lived in the house with
his wife Jacobina and perhaps a son who was a clerk at the First
National Bank. He died around 1915 when title passed to his
widow. Henry Lageschulte, Jr., sold the property in 1920.
Assessment amounts indicate that a grove had been associated with
the land consistently since 1900. The house is significant as
one of the earliest grove houses on Euclid Avenue.
