Description
Stonework and a distinctive siding pattern are the most notable
features of this one-story Craftsman bungalow. An L-shaped gable
roof caps the structure. Braces, rafters, and vents are exposed
in the eaves. Horizontal siding alternating a single wide band
to three narrow ones sheathes the structure. The porch is tucked
under the front gable, oriented towards the south. A cobblestone
porch wall and pier define the space. Stone was also employed
for the building foundation. The entry is centered on the porch
and faces south. Windows are double-hung sash in type. No major
alterations were noted, and the bungalow is in good condition.
It occupies a generously sized parcel with a depth of 270 feet.
This house is notable for its association with the Richardson
family. E.H. Richardson was the inventor of the Hotpoint iron.
A former employee of the Ontario Electric Company, Richardson was
once in charge of the San Antonio Heights powerhouse. He began
experimenting with electric appliances, developing an electric
room heater, a cooking stove, and then the iron which heated the
tip of the device. With a partner he formed the Pacific Electric
Heating Company in 1904 in ontario. The name was changed to the
Hotpoint Heating Company, then the Edison General Electric
Heating Company until the plant became a unit of General Electric
in 1933. It became one of the largest employers in the vicinity
outside of the citrus industry.
According to the assessment record, this house was erected in
1918-19. The owner was Grace Richardson. She was listed in the
directories on Ruedy (the former name of this portion of Twelfth)
as the widow of N.R. Richardson.
