Description
American Colonial Revival styling is evidenced by this two-story
residence. Capped by a hipped and gabled roof, the building is
sheathed in clapboard. A friezeboard circles the exterior below
the slight roof overhang. The symmetrically arranged facade
contains three bays which are defined by the fenestration. The
second story bays and the side bays on the first floor contain
one-over-one double hung sash windows flanked by shutters. A
projecting entry, gabled and containing a paneled door, occupies
the center bay. Brick chimneys mark the east and west
elevations. Also on the west, a porte cochere extends from the
house. The property is enhanced by orange trees on the west and
palm trees in the parkway. Its integrity is unknown.
The assessment record for lot 265 of the ~ntario Colony indicates
that it has been improved since 1899-1900. In 1898-99 the owner
was James Wilcox. H.G. Johnson was assessed in 1900. According
to the 1900 directory, Harry G. Johnson and wife, ranchers, lived
on 21st Street. Beginning in 1911 Tyler R. woodbridge was
assessed for the property and his location in the directory
corresponds to this house. It was given as the north side of
20th one west of ~uclid. Woodbridge was an orange grower and a
city trustee, serving as Upland City Mayor from 1914-16. It is
unknown whether this was the house on the property at the time of
woodbridge's residency; it certainly postdates 1900 in terms of
exterior styling. Possibly the house is a substantial remodel or
was the second house on the site, built on the 1920s. It is
significant as a former grove house, retaining some of its trees
on an acre of land, and possibly for its association with
Woodbridge.
