Description
A typical Craftsman vocabulary informs the design of this twostory
residence. The two-story portion of the building is set
back and capped by a side gable roof. Front gables top a section
of the lower story and the porch. All of the gables are lowpitched,
with exposed beams and rafters in the overhangs and
vertical venting beneath the gable peaks. Elephantine piers set
on brick pedestals carry the porch gable. Facade windows are
arranged in pairs of double-hung sash, with the entry centered
between the lower story openings. The house is sheathed in
clapboard and mostly unaltered. It is in good condition.
This house illustrates the persistence of the Craftsman mode into
the 1920s in Upland. Assessment records reveal that construction
took place in 1924-25. Walter Hastings was the assessed owner.
His address was listed as 2119 N. Palm in the 1926 directory;
perhaps this was the Ontario address for the house. This section
of Upland was annexed in 1931.
