Description
Several Craftsman characteristics have survived the remodeling of
this two-story grove house. A side gable roof crowns the facade
of the building, detailed with exposed rafters in the eaves and a
central gablet containing a dormer. Clapboards trimmed with
endboards sheathe the structure, which sits on a cobblestone
foundation. Spanning the facade, a pent roof over an extension
of the first floor probably corresponds to the former porch. Now
the entry is located at the east end of the space and faces east.
A pergola and a stone chimney are also features of the east
elevation. Clusters of three double-hung sash windows are
located on each side of the upper facade; the lower story
fenestration is part of the alteration. The property, which
includes some mature plantings and brick edged garden beds, is in
good condition.
No information about the construction or ownership of this house
was located. Now part of Tract 9049, subdivided relatively
recently, the house appears to have originally been in lot 461 of
the Ontario Colony. Most likely it was the grove house for that
lot and is notable in that regard.
