Description
Three front gables are the dominant elements of the design of
this two-story Craftsman residence. The rear gable,
characterized by exposed beams and rafters, extended bargeboard,
and vertical venting in the peak of the gable face, caps the
upper story. Topping the first floor, the middle gable is
enveloped in ivy; it appears to be similarly treated. Offset to
the east, the forward gable defines the porch. A post and beam
composition fills the open gable face. Plain posts on stout
pedestals carry the gable and are connected by a horizontal
railing. Tripartite windows flank the central door. Paired and
single double-hung sash windows are located on the upper facade.
Horizontal siding of alternating heights sheathes the house which
is substantially unaltered and in good condition.
A good example of Craftsman styling this intact house was
probably built around 1912. It is located in lot 599 of the
~ntario Colony, a part of Ontario rather than the city of Upland
until 1931. Historic tax assessments indicate that the lot was
substantially improved with trees, suggesting that this was a
former grove house.
