Description

Art stone elements distinguish this on-and-one-half story residence. The shingled structure is capped by a side gabled roof which has a central, shed roofed dormer. A porch is recessed across the facade, beneath a cross beam with an arched soffit. The space is inclosed by an art stone porch wall. Central steps with stone side walls lead to a centered entry which is flanked by tripartite windows. The dormer windows appear to have been reglazed; otherwise the house appears to be largely intact. It is inhanced by landscaping, including mature succulents.

This house was built between 1907 and 1912 for Harry C. and Guy Kennedy. By 1912 the entire block of First Avenue between C and D Streets, except one lot, had been improved with one to two story homes. Many of the residents lived within a block or two of their work, like Kennedy, who was the proprietor of the Upland Cyclery. Apparently Kennedy had lived a block further south on First Street prior to the construction of this house. Today only the Kennedy house and the Stewart house next door are remnants of the earlier character of this section of downtown Upland.
