Description
Bearing a remarkable resemblance to historic photographs, this
one-story cottage was influenced by the Eastlake style. A side
gable roof caps the shiplap-sided structure. The focal point of
the facade is the entry, announced by a gable whose pediment is
decorated with a raised grid motif. An elaborate stickwork
design of brackets and posts embellishes the pillars which carry
the gable. Extending to either side, an elevated porch is shaded
by the side gable overhang and rimmed by an X-patterned railing.
Most of the windows have been altered; however the diagonal and
vertical siding laid in panels beneath a continuous sill remains.
Another modification has been the removal of the front steps.
The building is in fair condition.
Local histories and historic photographs identify this remarkably
intact residence as the George Barlow house and the Postal
Telegraph Office. One photograph dated 1890 shows the house
nearly identical in appearance to today. The first telegraph
message sent from Ontario was transmitted on December 11, 1885.
This was the North Ontario office, located in a private home so
that the facility could be tended at all times. The date of
construction of the house is unknown. It is located in block 33
of the Magnolia Tract which was not subdivided until several
years after the house was built. The woodwork on the building is
particularly notable; it is one of only a handful of examples of
"Victorian Gingerbread" in Upland.
