Description
American colonial Revival styling is featured in the design ofthis two-story residence. A side gambrel roof caps thestructure, punctuated by three large shed roofed dormers on thesecond story. Each dormer contains a six-over-six double-hungsash window which is framed by wooden shutters with crescent cutouts.Wide clapboards sheathe the dormers and the body of thehouse. The lower story contains three bays which correspond tothe three dormers above them. In the side bays, pairs of windowsare identical to those in the dormers. The central bay containsthe entry which is shaded by an extension of the roof. Tuscancolumns sitting on a cobblestone wall carry the roof. Sidelightsflank the doorway which is distinguished by an arched panel. Thestone wall stretches across the facade to define open porchspaces east and west of the entry. On the east, a one-story wingis topped by a small balustrade. In good condition, the house appears to be largely unaltered. This house is located on a parcel within lot 454 of the OntarioColony. Most likely the building was erected following a lotsplit in 1938. Jane Thompson was the assessed owner. The houseis significant as one of the only examples of the gambrel roofedvariants of the American Colonial Revival style erected withinthe vicinity. It may also have been a grove house. No otherpre-subdivision houses have survived on lot 454, although theassessment record indicated the existence of an earlierimprovement.
