Description
Shrubbery shields much of this one-story, turn-of-the-century cottage from view. The building is side gabled, with a central hip rising from the ridgeline and a front gable over the south bay of the facade. Both the body of the house and the gable end are clapboarded. A screen porch spans the north two-thirds of the facade. Other visible details include the boxed cornices and double-hung sash windows. The cottage has no major alterations; the screening of the porch appears to have been done near the time of construction. It is in fairly good condition. RESEARCH NOTES: L.E. Tucker owned this property from 1900 to 1913. Only a $25 improvement was recorded on the lot in 1903; however, as early as 1900 the city directory indicated that L.E. Tucker, laborer, and wife lived on Second Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets (i.e. Arrow and F). By 1907 the directory listing is more specific: "Tucker, L.E., foreman fruit packers, southwest corner F and 2nd.I' Between 1914 and 1922 Chad K. Francisco, a foreman with the Stewart citrus Association, his wife Alice, and Fay Francisco resided at 593 N. Second Ave. Francisco was the mayor of Upland from 1926 to 1928. In 1924 Frances X. and Marie E. Toomey were assessed for the property; they lived there with L. Ord Toomey and Othelia Toomey, both students. Francis was a machinist. The most famous member of the Toomey family was Regis, an actor who appeared in more than 150 films and numerous television shows. The house is still owned by a member of the Toomey family.
