Description
Most of this two-story grove house is hidden from the observer.
The most revealing feature is its windows: very tall and narrow
in proportion, double-hung in operation, and grouped in twos, all
of which suggest a pre-1900 construction date. A one-story
addition, capped by gabled roof with exposed rafters, is more
Craftsman in appearance. The original portion is clapboarded and
sits on a stone foundation. Enclosure of a small porch has
altered the entry. Shutters, probably a later addition, flank
the windows and suggest the influence of the Colonial Revival.
No other details can be seen. In fairly good condition, the
house shares a parcel nearly one acre in size with a grove.
The assessment record for this parcel is inconclusive. A wO1v
improvement assessment was made in 1916; however, improvements
were taxed in the years before and after that date. Since the
character of the windows is not at all typical of 1916-17, it is
believed that the house must date to the turn of the century or
earlier. Frank L. Winn, an orange grower, owned lot 296 of the
Ontario Colony, in which this house is located, in the 1910s.
According to the directories, he lived at 550 Euclid. There was
a tree assessment for lot 296. Apparently the grove house was
rented out. According to former neighbors of Winn he was from
South Dakota where he operated a carnival. He came to Upland in
search of a better climate for his wife's health. This house is
significant as an early grove house which retains a portion of
its original grove.
