Description
A one-and-one-half story barn is the structure of note in the
6.85 acre parcel located on the southwest corner of Grove and
Arrow Highway. The walls of the barn are of stone and cement
construction while the loft is woodframe. A front gable tops the
loft which has unglazed window openings on the front and sides
framed with extended lintels and sills. Another front gable, its
ridge replaced by the loft, tops the lower story. Rafters are
exposed in the eaves. Heavy timbers frame more unglazed openings
in the lower story. The barn doors, centered below the loft, are
missing. Various fences and corrals extend outward from the
structure. It is in a seriously deteriorated condition.
his section of Upland, just next to the eastern city boundary,
was not annexed to the city until 1926. Part of the Ontario
Fruit Lands, this parcel was improved around 1908 when M. J.
Johnson purchased it from the Cucamonga Land and Improvement
Company. The assessments also included a small amount for trees
and vines. Presumably the barn was intended for livestock and
was built around 1908. It is notable for its construction and
for its agricultural origins and function. There are probably
less than a dozen - if that many - barns still standing in Upland
today.
