Description
A pair of fairly steep front gables are the focal point of this
one-and-one-half story Craftsman residence. Extended beams and
rafters are exposed in the eaves. The larger gable covers the
primary volume and is vented at its peak with latticework.
Offset to the east, the smaller gable tops an attached porch.
Plain posts resting on cobblestone pedestals carry the porch
gable. Elevated four steps, the porch is enclosed by a low
cobblestone wall. It contains the entry and double-hung sash
window whose upper sash is smaller than the lower. An identical
window is located to the west of the porch. On the upper facade
a single window, which has been re-glazed, is centered below the
vent. Clapboard sheathes the structure, which sits on a stone
foundation. Other than the window and the addition of shutters,
the house appears to be unaltered.
This house was built on the west half of lot 486 of the Ontario
Colony sometime between 1905 and 1915. F.C. Hildreth owned the
property as early as 1895; in 1914-15 he sold it to J. Wade
Holden. Presumably this was a grove house; like most of the
widely scattered homes of the era north of 11th Street, it is now
surrounded by relatively recent development.
