Description
Set back from Eleventh Street on an elevated lot north of the
intersection with Silverwood, this is a one-story residence in
the Queen Anne style. Although the address is on Silverwood the
house faces south and is partly obscured from view. A hipped and
gabled roof with boxed cornices caps the clapboarded structure.
Gable ends are faced with fishscale shingles, outlined by
bargeboards with flared ends, and contain arched vents in raised
panels at their peaks. Sawn brackets in an open fan pattern and
pendents mark the corners where the south facing gable overhangs
a three-sided bay. A porch, set back on the east side of the
bay, appears to have been enclosed. Windows are tall and narrow
double-hung sash with corbeled sills. The house sits on a rubble
foundation. A brick chimney rises up the west elevation. The
lot is bordered by a cobblestone wall. In good condition, the
house, while altered, retains most of its Queen Anne
characteristics.
The origins of this Queen Anne cottage are unknown. Based on
style, it is estimated to date from circa 1895. The oldest house
in the vicinity, it is notable for its age and for its
representation of the Queen Anne style. The treatment of the
gables and the brackets below them are especially evocative of
this architectural idiom.
