Description
Heavy tapered stone piers are the most notable feature of this
two-story Craftsman home. The piers support a front gable over
the porch and entry and another front gable over a porte cochere
at the east end of the facade. A side gable caps the principal
volume of the house. Extended beams and vertical venting
characterize the gable ends. Clapboard of alternating heights
sheathes the structure, which rests on a stone foundation.
Extended lintels top the entry and cottage window which flanks
it. Other windows are both double-hung and casement in type.
Alterations include the removal or screening of the rafters in
the eaves, some new windows, and solar heating panels. Overall
the house is largely intact and in good condition. Like many
former grove houses it is announced from the street by the
overhanging branches of a mature evergreen. In addition heraldic
lion figures with paws outstretched sit on pedestals at the
sidewalk.
No information regarding the origins of this house was uncovered.
It appears to have been just outside the boundaries of the
Ontario Colony and subdivided fairly recently. Presumably this
was the grove house for the surrounding area; it is significant
as such.
