Description
Located on a large parcel at the northwest corner of 13th and
Wilson, this one-story rustic residence is heavily shaded by a
canopy of mature trees. It is distinguished by its cobblestone
walls. Capped by front and side gables, the building is entered
through a veranda tucked under the side gable. Plain wood posts
define the space, which is terminated on the west by the front
gabled wing. Windows are casement in type, and feature concrete
sills and wood lintels. A wood garage on the north appears to be
new construction, but the building appears to be otherwise intact
and in good condition.
The use of stone makes the house noteworthy. Cobblestone is a
ubiquitous element on historic Upland buildings, generally
appearing in foundations, porch walls and piers, and chimneys.
Its use as the primary building material is much rarer, thus the
significance of this dwelling. The origins of the house are
unknown. It obviously preceded subdivision and most likely was a
grove house.
