Description
Occupying a large parcel at the corner of Wilson and 17th, this
is a two-story residence in the Monterey Revival style. The
lower story is of brick construction while the upper, originally
sided with board and batten, has been covered with asphalt
shingles. A side gable roof with rafters exposed in the eaves
caps the structure. Spanning the facade beneath the gable
overhang, the characteristic, Monterey style balcony is enclosed
by wood posts and a stick railing. Shaped beams support the
projection. Three pairs of casements, the ones in the center
full height, open onto the space. The central bay on the lower
story contains the entry. Sidelights flank the door, originally
wood with an oval light and now another pair of casements.
Filling the side bays, large, multi-paned tripartite windows with
arched transoms are set into the brick beneath soldier brick
arches.
The Monterey Revival style became popular in Southern California
around 1930, the estimated date for this house. Pictured in the
fiftieth anniversary edition of the Dailv Revort, the house was
the home of Norman and Jenny Lawson. Lawson was the vice
president and secretary of the Liberty Groves Operating
Corporation. The property is significant for its size and
architectural quality, its presumed previous existence as a grove
house, and its association with Lawson and the citrus industry.
A cobblestone chimney rises up the south elevation. To the north
a one-story garage has been joined to the house by a causeway.
The house is in good condition.
