Description
Located on nearly three acres at the southeast corner of Wilson
and 17th, this is a two-story grove house in the Spanish style.
It is set deep within the lot, approached by an allee of
eucalyptus trees on one side and palms on another. Little can
be seen of the house, which is stucco sided and capped by a tiled
roof. Windows are casement in type. No other details of the
house, which appears to be unaltered and in good condition, can
be seen. The property also includes a grove of citrus trees.
The remarkable size of this parcel, its stands of eucalyptus and
palms, the continued presence of a grove, and an intact house
from circa 1925 contribute to the significance of this property.
Widely scattered grove houses were the primary improvements north
of ~oothill until the post war housing boom resulted in the
removal of most groves and their subdivision for tract style
housing. This property is one of the most impressive remaining
from the earlier era. Further research is needed to identify its
original owners and an architect, if any.
