Description
Occupying a large, irregularly shaped parcel, this two-story
house is an example of the influence of the Swiss Chalet on
Craftsman design. A low pitched gable caps the structure,
supported by large sawn brackets. Separating the gable face from
the upper story, a scalloped molding spans the facade. Dark
stained horizontal siding sheathes the structure. Canvas screens
block what appears to be the front porch from view; posts and
beams with prominently exposed joinery seem to characterize the
space. A pergola extends off to the side. Through it a series
of brackets indicates that the second story overhangs the first
on the side elevation. No other details can be seen. Enveloped
in mature vegetation, the house is fenced off from the street,
with cobblestone pylons at the gates. Its integrity is unknown,
although the house appears to be in good condition.
The Craftsman style developed in the united States in the early
20th century, inspired by the English Arts and Crafts Movement
which grew up around William Morris in the late 19th century.
From their ~nglish predecessors, the Americans adapted certain
aesthetic conventions, such as a taste for the homes of the
European countryside and a respect for natural materials
exploited for their innate beauty. In Southern California wood
was the most common building material, and the traditions of the
Swiss chalet and the Japanese palaces were especially influential
because of their use of wood. Few examples of the more pure
interpretation of swiss chalet exist; this appears to be one of
them. Its origins are unknown, having been located outside the
mapped boundaries of the Ontario Colony on land not subdivided
until recently. Presumably this was a grove house.
