Description
Late Queen Anne stylistic influences inform the design of this
one-story residence. Its hipped and gabled porch culminates in a
large, shingled gablet. A turret crowns a pentagonal bay on the
southern corner of the facade. Stretching south from the bay, an
L-shaped porch wraps the northern corner. Chamfered posts
support the pent porch roof. Entries are located on the porch
next to the bay, and at the east end of the southern section of
the porch. Stone stair walls flank the four steps leading to the
open porch. Alterations include the foundation, asphalt siding,
rear additions, and a new front door. The house is in good
condition.
James Houses, listed as a rancher in the 1900 directory,
apparently built this house after acquiring this property from
the Magnolia Land and Water Company. It was assessed to Mrs.
N.P. (Nancy) Houses, the widow of James, after 1908. It is
significant as one of the more complete examples of a Queen Anne
cottage in Upland. In this regard the pentagonal bay with turret
and wrap-around porch are most noteworthy.
