Description

A screen of vegetation surrounds this one-story residence, shielding it from view. Located at the northeast corner of Mountain and 20th Street, the house is of cobblestone construction and is capped by a tiled gable roof. Some openings may be round-headed, all other details are hidden. Its integrity is unknown.

No information about this property was located. It consists of a large, irregularly shaped parcel and was, most likely, associated with a grove. The house is notable in this regard and for its architectural character. Stone buildings are resources particularly identified with the West End of San ~ernardino County and the surrounding communities. They were made possible by the large quantities of stone occurring in the open fields, which needed to be cleared in order for construction or agriculture to be pursued. Despite their stone cladding the buildings adhered to recognizable types and styles: for example, Craftsman, ~editerraneanIMission, utilitarianlbarn. particular care was paid to the framing of window and door openings. While stone was plentiful, however, most of it was used for foundations, chimneys, porches, street gutters, and retaining walls. All stone buildings are relatively rare and for that reason are especially notable.
