Description
A pair of side-by side front gables are the focal point of this
two-story Craftsman grove house. Detailed with extended
bargeboards and exposed braces, the gable ends are shingles in
the peaks, vented and contain eight-over-one double-hung sash
windows flanked by shutters. Below a plain frieze, clapboard
sheathes the body of the house. A curious bay with a single,
off-set window separates the two gable ends. Both this
projecting space and the north gable are fronted by a stickrailed
balcony. The balcony sits atop the roof of a screened
porch. A tripartite window with small, square panes in the upper
sashes is linked up below the south gable. The house sits on a
stone foundation. To the south of the house a barn/garage is
topped by a cupola, reiterating the Colonial influence observed
on the house.
The assessment records indicate that this house was built prior
of 1915. A grove had been planted on the property as early as
1901 when the owner was H.L. McNeil. In 1910 R.J. Laidlaw was
assessed. A notice in the Builder and Contractor in April 1901
noted that:
"R. J. Laidlaw has secured the contract for the
erection of a two-story, eight-room residence at Euclid
Ave. and 20th St., for L.J. Goff. It will have
pointed-up stone foundations and columns, hardwood
floors, plate glass, slashed grain pine trim, complete
plumbing and electric lighting system and furnace. The
plans were prepared by Architect L.T. Bishop of
Pomona."
Mature trees and shrubbery as well as orange trees are located on
the property was as well. Other than the screening of the porch
and the Colonial detailing the house appears unaltered. It is in
good condition.
A slim possibility exists that the house described as 2008 N.
Euclid could be one and the same if the stone columns were
removed and an error in the identity of the owner (not unheard of
in the Builder and Contractor) was made. The directories show
Laidlaw living in Upland in 1909-1911, no address given. He was
residing at this address in 1912-13 as was Christopher G. Walton,
assessed owner in 1911 and 1912. Both men are listed as orange
growers. In 1913 Edward A. Marshall was assessed, followed by
Florence D. Marshall from 1914 to 1916. The Marshalls were also
ranchers. Regardless of its precise origins, the house is
notable as an original grove house on Euclid Avenue, one which
retains a remnant of its grove.
